Q&A with I Am Snow Angel, anticipating her new EP
I Am Snow Angel is the solo project of New York artist Julie Kathryn. Her brand of electronic music is airy and effortless and her vocals enter your mind like a whisper in a dream. On stage she performs alone and you can see this live at Mercury Lounge Wednesday, when she celebrates the release of her new EP “Desert”, out on May 20.
We are thrilled that I Am Snow Angel found the time to provide us with answers to our questions in our Offstage series:
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
A bunch of tracks from Beyonce’s new album. Especially “Hold Up” and “Sorry.”
Do you have a “go-to song” from your childhood, one you always enjoy hearing again?
Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire.” I actually covered that one on my album “Crocodile.” I also love “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS.
What was the first album you have ever bought? And on which medium: digital, vinyl, CD or cassette tape?
I bought Pearl Jam’s “Ten” on cd.
Is there a song you’d like to cover?
I’d like to re-work the Nine Inch Nails track “A Warm Place” in my own way. I feel spiritually connected to that song and I’d like to see what would come out.
What’s your songwriting process like? What comes first, melody or lyrics?
It changes from song to song. Sometimes a song shows up in my awareness, fully formed. Other times, I have a single element, like a guitar riff or vocal hook, and I build the song around it. Sometimes I create an entire instrumental track in Ableton, and then I write the vocal melody and lyrics last.
Playing live, what has been your favorite venue so far? And why?
Mercury Lounge has been my favorite so far. It’s a great room and can handle the bass heavy elements of my set. I’m playing there again for my “Desert” EP release party on May 18 and I can’t wait!
If you could choose to live in a decade (music, style, etc.) which one would it be?
At this moment, I am nostalgic for the 90s. But in all reality, as a musician I like living in this decade, where I have the technology to produce and engineer my own music and craft my vision from start to finish.
