Laurence-Anne – Politesse

Montreal-based artist Laurence-Anne sings in French, and she also uses “automatic writing,” the practice of writing subconsciously. But the dark, orchestral soundscape of “Politesse” is so rich and expressive that you don’t need to understand the lyrics verbatim to be moved by the song.

Laurence-Anne explains her writing process:

“Being a person of few words, automatic writing has always been a useful tool for me when working on lyrics, as it helps me to externalise and understand my emotions, fears and needs. When I dream, I have this same type of interaction with my subconscious. Everything becomes clearer to me. Politesse points to the end of something, to the clues that were there before my eyes when I kept them shut for too long.
