SONG PICK: 88/89 – Bite the Bullet

Awww – I remember 1988 and 1989 well, but contrary to Michael Hornby (vocals) and Jack James (guitar), neither of these two years were the one I was born in. In 88/89‘s case, though, their birth years not only make for a cool band name but also set the tone musically: hard-hitting drums meet alluring synth-pop, stunning guitar work, and killer vocals.

In its irresistible vibe and brilliance, “Bite the Bullet” evokes Bronski Beat’s smash hit “Smalltown Boy.” While the latter addresses homosexuality and acceptance, “Bite the Bullet” explores relationships with all their ups and downs. The good, the bad, and the ugly, but the good wins. We’re hooked!
