“Did My Light Go Out” is a beautifully melancholic track that pulls on your heartstrings yet in a way that makes you deeply ache while simultaneously feeling strangely uplifted. Elias Bendix walks the slippery slope of hit or miss; in the case of this exquisitely crafted song, it is an absolute hit! The Danish singer/songwriter knows exactly what he is doing in his latest single, which whets my appetite for more. Of course, such a fantastic song also comes with an intriguing background story to give it even more meaning.
Indeed, in early 2023, Elias Bendix uprooted his Copenhagen life and moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to start a new chapter with his family. The harsh conditions of the country’s population have shifted his perspective, and he says:
“There is extreme poverty in the country, and basic human rights are not exactly a given.
Elias continues:
“Before we left, I felt like I had lost motivation for everything. I had doubts about where I was going. But the contrast between the safety of Denmark and Ethiopia has given me a new outlook that puts my musical dreams into perspective. We are so privileged in Denmark, and maybe that’s why the recognition from the industry is not so important to me anymore. Success can be measured on many different levels, and that has been an important realization for me.”
